The author is a well-known laser scientist/professor who loves to write about lasers. Focused to Kill is his first novel. His early career was spent at Bell Laboratories doing laser research, and later he was a Professor of Physics and Optics at the University of Central Florida. He holds the rank of Fellow in three technical societies and was recently recognized as one of 27 Laser Luminaries (laser pioneers) during the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of the laser.  He has authored over 100 technical papers, and a very successful laser textbook.  In addition to writing, his interests include playing the cello, cooking, wine-making, gardening, woodworking, and traveling.

Paul (Ammar) Mercer, a disillusioned twenty five year old who becomes extremely frustrated with the way big money influences the government at the expense of the poor and downtrodden, is recruited by a radical Islamic terrorist cell.  The former Berkeley physics student secretly begins to develop a laser weapon – a powerful, portable device with an invisible beam capable of killing at great distances with great precision.
Jim Campbell, head of an FBI antiterrorist taskforce unexpectedly becomes acquainted with the powerful capabilities of lasers through his nephew David Cardwell, a graduate engineering student at Berkeley and a friend of Paul’s.  This connection leads him to gradually uncover a massive conspiracy: a web of intrigue, deceit, and unexpected alliances that reaches to the White House itself.  Ammar and Jim become entrenched in a subtle, deadly game of cat and mouse that takes the reader from the Bay Area, to Reno, Las Vegas, and Salt Lake City and then on to Washington, DC, where the viability of the laser weapons system – and the identity of its financiers/benefactors – are revealed in a sudden, startling climax.
“Bill Silfvast's Focused to Kill is a stark, gripping story about a deadly technology and the all-too-human terrorists responsible for its existence. Silfvast's technical expertise makes the premise of this thriller all the more plausible - and disturbing - while his imagination and eye for detail create a richly-textured story, worthy of comparison to the best political thrillers on the shelves today." --- Eira Long, Editor, Perfectly Scientific Press
